PATIENT WHO JUST HAD A TOOTH EXTRACTED:

TODAY:

Please do not smoke, spit, use a straw, or drink alcohol. These activities may dissolve or dislodge the blood clot. This could slow down the healing process and possibly lead to a dry socket.

Change the gauze in 30 minute increments, and repeat this process for up to an hour after extraction. By this time, the clot should be formed, then leave the gauze out.

Avoid lifting and straining for the remainder of the day.

Unless given a prescription, take Ibuprofen for pain (600 mg dosage every 4 hours). Aleive, Orudis, or Tylenol are just fine.

If swelling occurs today, use a cold compress: 15/20 minutes ON, then 15/20 minutes OFF. Repeat this every 2-4 hours as needed. Tomorrow start using a warm compress with the same sequence, You can make a warm compress by heating up a damp towel in the microwave for 45 seconds. If it is to hot for your hand, don’t use it!.

A soft diet is recommended today. Chew on the other side of the mouth, if possible. Don’t eat chips, crackers, etc. please.

TOMORROW:

Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water twice a day. (4 oz. Warm water to 1/4 tsp. Salt)

You can use a warm compress after the first day.
