Many advances have been made in treating gum disease over the last 20 years.
Probably the most important approach of conservative pocket reduction falls in
the area of treating the pockets by placement of antibiotic solutions. We call
this a site specific antibiotic therapy. It has been shown in clinical research
to significantly improve and extend the positive effect of deep cleaning, which
we call scaling and root planing.
Following thorough removal of the bacteria from a periodontal pocket, the
area is irrigated with peroxide and an antibacterial rinse called Chlorhexidine.
Then a tetracycline class antibiotic is applied Arestin uses Minocycline which
attached itself to the root and the periodontal tissue, giving an antibacterial
effect for 10 days. Many researchers have noted improved pocket reduction and
diminished bacteria for as much as six months to a year.
These agents are not inexpensive, however their added benefit is positive
enough to warrant their use in any periodontal pocket over 5mm deep. One
significant attribute of this kind of antibiotic therapy is that it does not
require absorption or redistribution by your blood flow to the site.
Peridex or Perioguard are antibacterial rinses which are very effective at
decreasing the bacterial activity in the mouth. A mere swish and rinse twice a
day is not only recommended for people with periodonta; disease, but for people
who have had any type of oral surgery. They are pleasant tasting and the only
disadvantage of the product is that it can stain the teeth, however it is easily
removed by a professional polishing, such as your regular cleaning.
Fluoridex Mouthwash
Fluoridex is a great solution for treating sensitive teeth,
decay at the root of the tooth, and generalized sensitivity.
Fluoridex therapy has been proven beneficial in maintaining
optimal oral health, particularly in the prevention of tooth decay
and hypersensitivity. Since the introduction of fluoride into
public water supplies more than 50 years ago, the incidence of
cavities has declined dramatically by strengthening developing
permanent teeth.
However, professional fluoride treatments, combined with daily
home therapy, can often times improve dental health. Treatment
options vary according to a patient's susceptibility to decay,
level of tooth sensitivity, periodontal (gum disease) condition
and number of cosmetic restorations.
If you have had a questionable area of decay, tooth
sensitivity, or bleeding gums within the last year, one of our
professional take home kits may be necessary. We also find that
daily fluoride activity is extremely helpful with children that
have orthodontic appliances.

Daily Defense Toothpaste
The daily defense toothpaste is
specially designed to accompany the Fluoridex mouthwash. This
combination is specifically designed and promoted for individuals
that have private, well water or do not have access to public
water that has been fluoridated.
BreathRX Mouthwash
BreathRX is one of the most powerful mouth rinses available on
the market today to vanquish bad breath. BreathRX is alcohol free
and kills bacteria associated with plaque and gum disease on
contact. The effects from BreathRX keep working to neutralize the
effect of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC's) which are the cause of
bad breath. It comes in Clean Mint flavor and lasts all day.
We have a whole line of products from BreathRX that aid in the
battle against bad breath, such as tongue scrapers, tongue
cleansing gels, breath freshening chewing gums, and sprays.

Prophy Pencil
The Prophy Pencil is a new product that came onto the market
recently that makes it possible to remove stains off of teeth
caused by coffee, tea etc. The Prophy Pencil works by taking very
fine powder and blowing it against the enamel of the tooth, which
breaks apart the stains that resting on the outside layer. We find
this instrument to be very effective, and oftentimes incorporate
it as part of our patients' regularly scheduled re-care visit.
Gendex Digital X-Rays
Another
significant addition to our practice was the digital x-ray system
by Gendex. The device has many advantages, among them are the
ability to zoom in on problem areas within an x-ray, which gives
us a better picture to diagnose your problems with, and it allows
us to cut down the level of radiation significantly meaning that
the patient is exposed to only a fraction of the radiation that
the typical x-ray machines required. It also takes only a fraction
of the time to develop the digital x-rays as well. what used to
take five minutes now takes us two. After placing the film inside
this machine, the images are transported to the computer and saved
within our practice management software.
Laser Dentistry
There are many lasers available to do dental procedures. We have selected the Erbium Dental Laser, which allows for both hard (teeth) and soft (gums) tissue applications. This wavelength of laser has a great affinity for water and the hard tissue that teeth are made out of (Hydroxy Apetite). Our laser allows for a very comfortable removal of dental decay because it contains a significant volume of water.
Our patients seem to indicate that between 95% to 98% of the procedures done are comfortable without any anesthesia. The laser works very well in treating those burning, irritating and recurrent ulcers. It is not applicable to cases involving the removal of silver fillings or the fabrication of crowns. We do believe that it offers us a great potential with fluoride releasing composite
resin fillings to treat without creating a painful, negative situation.
